As of this writing, GCC-4.1.1
is the latest release. The Reference Build
now officially supports multiple GCC major versions. Please visit this
link for implementation details and latest information.
Please note GCC-4.1.x brings to the table some new features for
"hardening" your system i.e. -fstack-protector and -D_FORTIFY_SOURCE=2.
Please read this
mailing list post for details.
Many open source packages beyond the base Reference Build need patching
to enable compilation with recent GCC versions. It's worth noting the Fedora Project is inclined to use
bleeding edge GCC as its default compiler so a good place to find
patches is the Fedora
CVS Server.
